What the frac is fractional?
A training session for charity freelancers to get to grips with being a frac!
Burnout is out. Fractional is in.
Fractional working is gaining momentum – but it’s often misunderstood. For many consultants and nonprofit professionals, traditional ways of working still mean undercharging, over-delivering, and constantly proving their worth.
The old model pushes people to compete on price, chase short-term work, and start from scratch each month.
The fractional approach offers something different: a shift towards being a trusted strategic partner, embedded within organisations, valued for expertise rather than hours, and able to build a more sustainable, impactful way of working.
This isn’t just a trend – it’s a growing movement.
Fractional roles are everywhere right now – but what do they actually mean, and how do they differ from other ways of working?
During this 30-minute online session, Cindy Wagman and Alexander Stevenson introduced the concept of “fractional” work, explored how it works in practice, and helped charity freelancers understand whether this way of working is right for them.
About your hosts:
Cindy Wagman is the founder of the Nonprofit Fractionals Network and a leading voice in the shift towards fractional working.
After nearly two decades in the nonprofit sector, she experienced burnout and stepped away to start consulting. What began as a short-term solution quickly grew into a successful agency. Despite this, the traditional model of success didn’t offer the freedom or fulfilment she was looking for.
During the pandemic, Cindy chose to rebuild her business on her own terms – focusing on flexibility, impact and sustainability. She now supports experienced nonprofit professionals to build six-figure fractional consulting businesses that prioritise both purpose and profit.
Cindy has worked with more than 85 nonprofit fractionals, helping them move away from undercharging and over-delivering, and towards being valued as strategic partners.
She is also the bestselling author of Raise It! The Reluctant Fundraiser’s Guide to Raising Money Without Selling Your Soul, hosts a private podcast for nonprofit fractionals, and holds an MBA in Strategy and Change Management.
Alexander Stevenson is the founder of Blume, which has connected experienced freelancers with more than 150 small charities. He has previously worked as a consultant, a CEO, a Chair, and twice as a Treasurer.
